It's beautiful and harsh and shocking, but it's never likable nor easy to absorb. Adapted from the novel by Alexander Stuart, the film centers on a small English family that has just moved from London to the English seaside. During the course of the movie, the family is ruined by an incestuous sexual relationship between a working-class father Ray Winstone and his year-old daughter, Jessie played by newcomer Lara Belmont.
Tom Freddie Cunliffea sullen, friendless teenager, has been uprooted with his family to a dank and underpopulated backwater in Devon. One day, while mooching around, he chances to see his older sister Jessie Lara Belmont sharing a bathtub with their father Ray Winstone. Since we in the audience aren't privy to the sight, our view of Tom's character is clouded for a time by uncertainty as to whether he's actually telling the truth.
Its themes of domestic angst, familial breakdown and incest are not for the faint of heart. At the very least, Roth must be commended for tackling such a tough subject matter, doing so with an underlining ambiguity that disquiets and infuriates. His approach is refreshing in its lack of preaching and dispiriting in its lack of equilibrium. Indeed, my initial reaction was one of detachment.
Freddie Cunliffe Tim Roth was my favourite actor, even before I worked with him. And Gridlock'd - entertaining, but with a message as well, I think. I hadn't done any acting before The War Zone.
The next shot is of a boy riding a bike along a narrow road through a windswept landscape to a double-storey whitewashed cottage standing resolutely in the middle of an empty field. This is the war zone, and here is its hero: the boy, Tom Freddie Cunliffe. All nose and elbows and pimples, he mopes his sullen way through the whole hundred minutes.

In person, Ray Winstone comes across as friendly, thoughtful and humorous. It was a day I nearly just packed up and went -- " He imitates a muffled explosion. Why on earth would you want to put yourself through this? I was beginning to worry about her [state of mind].
The film is based on Stuart's novel of the same name and takes a blunt look at incest and sexual violence in an English family. His mother is in the late stages of pregnancy, his father in the home furniture industry. Tom and his year-old sister Jessie are unusually close to each other and everyone helps Mum during her pregnancy.
